The Columbia River
The Columbia River Basin is an very large area extending from Oregon and Washington into Montana, Idaho, British Columbia, and Alberta, as well as the very edges of Wyoming, Utah and Nevada. From all these areas many tributaries flow into the Columbia and from there into the Pacific Ocean, on the border between Oregon and Washington. These tributaries include: the Snake, Yakima, Wenatchee, Methow, Clearwater and Salmon Rivers [1].
There are five major species of anadromous salmonids in the Columbia river system: chum, sockeye, chinook, coho and steelhead. Historically there were six species, but the pink salmon population, native to the area, has gone extinct [2].
