Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary
History
Before the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary was
established, boat groundings consistently obliterated coral. Once three vessels
caused significant damage, the government considered designating the Keys as a national sanctuary. In 1989, the first bill for this was issued. Support was given by both environmentalist and
commercial and recreational users, according to Senator Graham.
A month later, on November 16, 1990, the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary was
established. The boundary incorporated Key Largo and the Looe Key sanctuaries to
make one continuous area [E].
