Distribution
Eelgrass is abundant in most near-shore environments of the Northern hemisphere. Eelgrass grows along both coasts of the United States. On the Pacific coast it ranges from the Alaskan Arctic through the Aleutian Islands down into Baja and into the Gulf of Mexico. Although populations die off during the warmer seasons in Baja and Southern California, they remain year-round in the Gulf of Mexico. This suggests an adaptation in these populations, which allows them to tolerate warmer temperatures.
Eelgrass is also found around Europe, especially the Northwest coastlines, and in Japan, Southern Greenland, and Iceland.
